It is good for getting the details behind a vague media report like "Some oil production was affected in the Gulf." They will have maps and photos showing the affected production.
Incidentally, I think that the way to think about the Earth now is a park. We've gotten rid of all the "wilderness" and we have stuff we have to actively watch over. There's too many of us and we have too much power to have "untouched nature" mean anything any more. There's no way to even know what the "pre-human"conditions where like. But we should try to make it an excellent park.
