Jerry A. McCoy: August 2009 Archives

A list has just been released by the United States Postal Service of 677 post offices nationwide that have been marked for possible closure or consolidation.  Of the 13 locations chosen in the "Capital District," nine are in the District of Columbia proper and one each are in Hyattsville, Rockville, Bethesda, and yep, Silver Spring.  Slated to possibly be closed is the Silver Spring Center post office at 8455 Colesville Road, across from Discovery and next to the McDonalds.

I'm royally pissed off at the post office.  Why?  The Silver Spring Historical Society has had it's post office box (1160) at this location since December 1999.  The only reason our society is at this location is because it was chosen for us, having been forced to leave the historic 1949 Blair Station post office at 8045 Newell Street in south Silver Spring.  This structure was eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and despite a valiant effort on our part to keep it open, it was shuttered and demolished.

If the Silver Spring Center location indeed gets axed, there is no doubt in my mind where we and a lot of other customers will be forced to go...the Hell hole known as "main" Silver Spring post office at 8616 2nd Avenue.  I absolutely hate that place.  From the rude clerks (the clerks are WONDERFUL at SSC), perpetual long lines, dreary interior, and stamp vending machines that rarely work to the undersized parking lot that you can rarely find a place to park much less "do the loop" of driving in/out to drop mail off in the curbside mailboxes...the Silver Spring post office is atrocious.

I hate this recession.
