This Place Mattered

I thought I'd do a follow-up to my "This Place Matters" May blog entry with photos of "This Place MATTERED"...due to the fact that these buildings have been demolished or so egregiously altered that in essence they have been demolished.

Wayne Avenue Parking Garage, site of the 1927 Maryland National Guard - Silver Spring Armory.  This Montgomery County Master Plan for Historic Preservation-designated historic site was allowed to be demolished in 1998 by an uncaring community for construction of a seven-story, 1,789-space parking garage (that eventually opened in 2005).  I am standing next to a section of the bas-relief concrete Maryland state flag that graced the facade of the Armory.  The remaining sections of the flag are mounted onto a similar support base at the other end of the parking garage.  Photo by Georgia French.

I was only 9 years old when the Armory was demolished but I remember it fondly and I miss the old Silver Spring. I love these photos. Thank you.
