New creative energy dances into town

A swath of violet hung from the ceiling and draped onto the floor in a sleek new studio of mirrors and windows. A small woman climbed the violet cloth, wrapped her legs around it, arched and hung gracefully in a slow acrobatic aerial dance above the gathered crowd of dancers and dance-lovers.

Thus began the February 20th opening of a new creative venue in Takoma Park, the new first home of the Echo Park Contemporary Ballet, who converted the old Sangha space at 7014 Westmoreland Avenue into a dance studio.

Cedric Tillman, the director of Echo Park, introduced his partner, Kenneth Rascher, and the dance ensemble. In a surrealistic bit of theatre, dancer Kelly Mayfield, lay underneath the table like a hangover from a party the night before. She then joined the Bad Boys of Dance in a dramatic, funny and muscular dance.

On the walls hung exquisite dance photos by Enoch Chang. (It’s worth visiting the studio, or enochchanphotography.com just to see the photos.)
