In
hopes of bringing community members together to promote an
active lifestyle, City Place Mall hosted the 3rd annual Silver
Spring Health and Fitness Expo on Saturday, September 16.
Every aspect of wellbeing and physical condition was covered
in the broad spectrum of vendors who sold their ideas and
products to the thousand plus attendees at the Expo. Everyone
from Wizards players to professional chefs came out to, "provide
a community activity that is both beneficial and fun," as
put by Aurelia Martin, Marketing Manager of the event.
"City
Place tries to blend in with the community and rest of Silver
Spring, attendance doubled this year and a there was a lot
more participation by our vendors," aid Martin.
And
the vendors not only sat idly behind tables relaying information
about their products and companies, but they also offered
interactive events like the Healthy Cooking Demo hosted by
professional chef Fred Johnson, which provided for a fun way
to gain knowledge of techniques everyone could use in their
daily lives.
Johnson thought that the Expo was, " very informative,
people seemed to have interesting questions and they came
out knowing something new." One person who came out learning
about food preparation skills was Silver Spring resident Judy
Tryens who used Johnson's cooking tips to, "prepare a meal
for a dinner party I'm hosting tonight, he told me to put
olive oil on my fish brochettes to keep them from getting
dry."
Johnson
wasn't the only one dolling out helpful hints that day either.
D.C. United player Andy Metcalf came out to, " Make sure everyone's
getting out to exercise now that summer's over," and of course
to also, "promote the team now that we are in playoffs." And
everyone's advice seemed to be well received.
After
hearing about Washington Wizard Andray Blatche's daily exercise
regime, sports
commentator Glenn Harris was asked if he was staying fit.
Harris (pictured above, receiving a massage) responded, "Well
look at me I'm 60 years old, I'm healthy."
Although
the occasional sports star and public figure could be seen
at the expo, the majority of the booths were held by area
organizations like EQ energy drinks. Their expo representatives
felt that it was, "very well put together, it is a good way
to generally get awareness out and get involved in the community.
We're a local company so we like to be part of local events."
Overall,
those attending felt that the expo was, " A great event... and
a positive thing for city place," as finely put by Elmora
and Kyra Harvey who helpfully served as the welcoming committee
that day.
