Magical Montgomery apparates
in Silver Spring on September 30

The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC) proudly announces the kick-off of National Arts and Humanities Month (in October) with Magical Montgomery County's Festival of the Arts and Humanities.   The festival will take place on Saturday, September 30, 2006 from 1-7pm, on Ellsworth Drive in Silver Spring.

Magical Montgomery is the best festival in the DC area for families.   All of the exhibits are interactive, fun and cultural.   The festival provides an opportunity to showcase Montgomery County's arts, humanities, and cultural organizations and allows the public to experience the rich cultural heritage that continues to blossom in the County.   This year's festival will feature an artist market with original artworks for sale, live music and entertainment, and creative activities for children, families and adults.

Arts and Humanities Activities

Over 100 booths at the festival will have free activities for children and adults.    Each Arts or Humanities organization at the festival will be providing information about what services and entertainment they offer.

A few of the interactive activities that will be going on at the booths include the following: Adventure Theatre, Mask making, American Dance Institute, Ballet, jazz, and flamenco lessons, Black Rock Center for the Arts, Sand art projects, City Dance Ensemble, Balloon painting and decorating, Class Acts Arts, Inc., African drum playing, Coral Cantigas, Latin American musical shakers creations, Levine School of Music Instrument petting zoo, Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras.  Live performances and music demos, Metropolitan Ballet Theatre & Academy, Try-on tutus, Raqs Roqs!, Belly dance lessons, Save Our Seminary at Forest Glen Japanese pagoda art project, Silver Spring Stage Costume and prop try-ons, Strathmore, Musical note necklace making, Tappers With Attitude, Inc., Tap shoe try-on and dance lessons--and so much more!

Mainstage Spotlight

In addition to performances at the booths, two performance stages will run the duration of the festival to spotlight some of the talent available in the County. The performances featured are incredibly diverse, ranging from classical ballet to belly dancing.

One of the musical groups playing includes Overhead, a local band consisting of students from four different Montgomery County high schools. Their original music was heavily influenced by the Rolling Stones and features the sound of "Old School" Rock & Roll.

The popular Ziva's Spanish Dance Ensemble will make a reappearance with their bold flamenco costumes and dance.   This ensemble captivates audiences with Spanish dances that range from the fiery and seductive flamenco of Andalusia to the spirited folk dances of Galicia, Aragon, Asturias, Valencia and Cataluna.   Other performances will include children's theater and puppets by ArtStream, Broadway performances by The Musical Theater Center, and a wide variety of music, dance, and theatrical performances.

Arts Market

Magical Montgomery will have a wide variety of artists selling their work at the festival.   From jewelry to oil paintings, original art can be purchased at the festival for gifts and for the home.   All of the artists selling at the street festival have been accepted by an independent jury based on the quality of their work.

The winner for the prize of "Best in Show" for the past two years has been artist Sandra Pope.   Pope is the resident artist for the Colour Art Studio & Gallery and specializes in the creation of African art.   Her ceramic work includes masks, vases, and sculpture.   She also paints in five different media.

For the public, the number to call for more information is 301-565-3805.
