"Silver Sprung" campaign kicks off

Have you noticed? Red "U"s have sprung up all over Silver Spring. They’re part of a new marketing campaign delivering the message that Silver Spring has "sprung" and is the place to come for entertainment, dining, shopping, working, and living.

On May 18, Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan and officials from the Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce unveiled the theme at a campaign kickoff held at the new Silver Plaza on Ellsworth Drive.

County Council President Steve Silverman and local resident/community activist Charles Atwell were also speakers at the event, while acrobats sprung from trampolines and Monty, the Silver Spring penguin, worked the crowd.

"This community is coming alive before our eyes," Duncan said, "and we wanted a campaign that would announce to the region, in no uncertain terms, that the new Silver Spring has arrived and is open for business and visitors."

To begin the campaign, "U"s have been placed over the "i" in Spring throughout the downtown area–on light poles, banners, signs, buses, and posters, and county officials and representatives are wearing "U" buttons. The next step will be placing highly visible "Silver Sprung" ads in print and on Metrobuses, and sending emails throughout the area. A website, www.silversprung.com, has also been created.

The campaign is being funded by Montgomery County and the Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce. According to the GSSCC, the total cost of the campaign is $165,000.

Andrew Fraser, president of the GSSCC, said, "Silver Spring is transforming, building on its existing business, employment, and residential core with the addition of many new restaurants, shops, parking garages, office buildings, housing, gathering places, and more. The Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce is proud to play a leading role in promoting this transformation and launching this campaign today. We are even more excited about Silver Spring’s future as one of the region’s most active and appealing commercial centers."
