Features: Q— Photos and Inquiry by Julie Wiatt

How do you cope with stress?

Chila Bettis: "I just have to take deep breaths and I just think of something I like, and soon I'm not stressed."

Darryl Bettis: "I watch TV or listen to music, and do what my wife tells me to do.

Mary Bettis [holding Cameron]: "I try to be really organized and plan and give myself a day off with the children. I try to take the children to occasions like soccer practice and I use the time to relax myself.

Mario Bettis: "I just listen to music." Frankie Bettis: "When I have stress I try not to focus on stress; I do other things."

Katja Toporski [with Alisha]: "Sports. Running. I forget about it and read a nice book. Generally I do something else that makes me feel happy, like go to the movies."

Elias Vlanton: "I close the door to my study and play on the internet. I obsessively check the news. Somehow being alone with an intellectual question is helpful. Satisfying intellectual curiousity is really calming. It gives me an excuse to be by myself."

Brianna Vlanton: "I talk to people. I talk to my parents and my therapist. And when I talk to her she helps me calm down and see what I can do about what happened. "

Espa Escudero Loaiza Bond: "Ice cream. Ice cream really calms me down. So does chocolate."

Renee Vlanton: "I like talking to my therapist or watching Animal Planet. Different animals look cool and are fun to see. I like monkeys. Some kinds are funny and cuddly."

Bill Dietrich: "In wintertime I ski. Other times I think about snow."

Lisa Mackie: "I think if something's really stressful I take a shower or, even better, a hot bath and I read a book. I read a lot of novels."

Our friend Carlos Jaimes also had a good answer: "When I'm stressed it usually means I'm stressed about something I have to do that I didn't do yet, so I do it."
