Who taught you something that changed your life?

Jose ManganaJose Mangana: "I come from El Salvador. I learned from my father. I've lived here for ten years with no problems, because I listened to him. The USA is the best country for everybody. It has opportunities for everybody."

Leon MaynorLeon Maynor: "I drank for many years. I lost my job, I lost everything. But my wife stood by me and helped me. She taught me to have a little respect for myself and my body."

Jim, Heather Sutcliff Jim Sutcliff: "My daughter Heather. She taught me humility. Children are made to deconstruct our belief system—that's why we have children. She's taught me respect also. She's getting to the age of independence. I have to learn to respect that."

Heather Sutcliff: "My best friend Keith. He's taught me so many things I don't know where to begin, about life and love and the pursuit of everlasting happiness."

Ronald WoodRonald Wood: "My cousin David. He's taught me to be a role model to my younger brothers, because he has been that for me in lieu of my father. He's taught me to take responsibility."

Sharon Burke: "I learn something everyday from my kid, and I never expected it. He doesn't have to say anything either. With Thomas, it's not just that I learn about him, I learn about who I am and how the universe is.

Sharon, Thomas BurkeAnd you learn a lot about who your parents were when you become one. You see everything in a whole new light. It's humbling — when you have a kid you realize how hard it is to be a parent."

Allie WarrenAllie Warren: "Mrs. Sapin taught me how to read. She started us out with simple books that seemed hard, like Sarah Plain and Tall. We read with a partner who was good at reading and it made you want to read, and it made you feel smart when you could read as well as them. There would be games like if you read and correct your mistakes you get points toward winning a prize. Mrs. Sapin tried to build your confidence."

Arthur HeardArthur Heard: "My pastor. What my pastor said again last night is read the scripture every day. Read it over and over until you learn it by heart."

Joana Pons: "I'm from Spain. I am a pianist now for the Washington opera. Professionally, I have learned from Placido Domingo, who is the director here, and from all the staff. Personally, my parents taught me you have to be discreet, not say anything bad about anyone, to observe and listen. Also that no one gives you anything for nothing. You have to work very hard. Life is not easy."
