Tony Hawk soars at Silver Spring Community Day

SilverDocs film festival planners estimate that 20,000 people participated in the Community Day held on June 22, 2003. Hundreds came to see The Making of Tony Hawk's Boom Boom HuckJam, screened on the final day of the SilverDocs film festival. Thousands came to see Hawk himself perform his skateboard magic on Georgia Avenue. A huge U-shape skateboard ramp was constructed so that Hawk and fellow skateboarders Jesse Fritch, Kevin Stabb, Lincoln Ueda, and Bucky Lasek could wow the crowd with their daredevil stunts.

Community Day featured a tent with live animals sponsored by the Discovery Communications series Animal Planet, food served up by local merchants, a music stage featuring several bands, two moon bounces, and skateboard ramps for Tony Hawk fans to try to produce their own skateboard magic.

The overwhelmingly successful film festival brought thousands to the downtown area and willÑ according to Discovery Communications staffers and American Film Institute officialsÑbe a regular feature in the future and will most likely be expanded to include more films and more activities.
