Savor community at Taste of Takoma

BY PETE DELEA

The third annual Taste of Takoma Park will be held on April 13 on the Columbia Union College campus.

The festival, which drew over 3,000 people last year, is a family-oriented event to promote diversity within the community.

"The idea is to bring the community together and give them a chance to experience all the different types of cultures in Takoma Park," said Kelly Allen, festival coordinator.

Several vendors from the community will participate this year, including Savory, Eastern Market, Pizza Palace, and Seleh's Treats.

Besides the food, festival-goers will have the opportunity to listen to local bands and receive free health screenings.

This year's music will feature Deewane, composed of Indian entertainers and the folk group, Sultans of Swing.

Allen said the festival tradition is to promote local bands and give the community the chance to see the local talent.

"It's not about bringing in the big name bands, it's about giving local bands a chance to shine," said Allen.

Allen said that Washington Adventist Hospital will provide blood pressure and osteoporosis screening. She said they will also be providing a dermascan, which uses a black light to show which areas of your face are dry, oily, sensitive, or rough. It can also detect sun damage.

The event will also feature entertainment for children, including face painting, story telling, carnival style games, and a fire engine for exploration.

The college's exhibition acrobatic team will also be on hand performing for kids of all ages. The Acro-Airs travel throughout the country performing at various functions, including Washington Wizards games, while promoting an anti-drug message.
