Tachys hoop it up

Local basketball team still going fast and strong

BY GARY WEINSTEIN

The Tachys, a high school basketball team in a Montgomery County recreation league, just completed its ninth straight year as a hoops powerhouse. While the roster has changed a bit through the years, the team has been comprised of boys from Takoma Park and Silver Spring. The team started in 1994, when the coach's son (Zak Weinstein), was in second grade.

"Tachys" is derived from the greek word for fast and strong. True to its name, the team was known for its fast and strong play, using its trademark trapping defense, which resulted in many steals and fast-break baskets. No records are officially kept, but Chris Criswell (in a Wizards jersey), undoubtedly holds the state record for steals. All the other players, listed below, were also stellar—and fast and strong.

Final standings for this season were not official at press time, but the Tachys unofficially came in second place, with a 6-2 record.
