Cindy Creamer is new police chief

Capt. Cynthia A. Creamer, a 25-veteran of the Takoma Park Police Department, was appointed its Chief of Police on July 23.

Creamer, the department's first female sergeant and lieutenant, will now lead the 41-officer department. "I'm very excited about the promotion of Capt. Creamer," said City Manager Rick Finn. "I am confident she will provide excellent leadership to the Department. She is an example of someone who started as a dispatcher, and with skill and effort, rose to the level of Chief. That speaks well of her and the City."

Creamer, 44, joined the Department in 1976 as a communications dispatcher, attending the Western Maryland Police Academy in Hagerstown and becoming an officer in 1978. Since August 2001, she has commanded the Operations Division, or uniformed patrol officers. She previously led a community policing unit and, for six years, the criminal investigations division. She earned Officer of the Year 1980 in patrol and the same award in 1990 for criminal investigations.

Among other commendations, she was the Department's first "Supervisor of the Year."

Chief Creamer, a Maryland native, succeeds Chief Tom Anderson who resigned in mid July, for personal reasons, after leading the department for five years.
